Our Story
We're not here to make matcha fancy.
We're here to make good matcha normal.
It started with a RM26 iced matcha latte.
Nice café, nice cup — but on the drive home the math wouldn't leave us alone. The matcha powder in that cup cost maybe two ringgit. The rest was rent, branding, and the idea that matcha has to be a luxury.
And we thought: we don't treat kopi this way. We don't treat teh this way. Good tea has always been an everyday thing in Malaysia — something you drink at a plastic table at 11pm with friends, not something you save for special occasions.
Matcha was born in China over a thousand years ago, in the tea houses of the Song dynasty — centuries before it ever reached Japan. And today, some of the world's finest matcha grows in the misty hills of Zhejiang province, where tea has been cultivated for twelve centuries. Same shade-growing. Same stone mills. Honest farms, without the inflated price tag that comes with a more famous postcode.
We tried dozens of samples. Most were fine. A few were genuinely great — vivid green, smooth, naturally sweet, no bitterness even when our whisking technique was terrible (it was very terrible). Those are the ones we bring in.
Simple Matcha is exactly what the name says. Ceremonial-grade matcha, sourced from where matcha began, priced so you can actually drink it every day. Whisk it properly if you want. Shake it with ice and Milo if that's your thing. We will never judge you. That's a promise.
A thousand years in the making
The origin
Song-dynasty China perfects powdered tea. Shade-grown leaves are ground on stone mills and whisked into a jade-green foam — an art form, a social ritual, and a meditation.
The journey east
The monk Eisai carries tea seeds and the powdered-tea method from China to Japan, where it evolves into the famous Japanese tea ceremony.
The return
Zhejiang's tea gardens — heirs to twelve centuries of tradition — grow shade-cultivated, stone-ground matcha of world-class quality. Simple Matcha brings it directly to your cup.
Three things we never compromise
i.
Origin honesty
We name our region, our harvest, and our process plainly. Zhejiang, China — said with pride, because it's the birthplace of the craft.
ii.
Simplicity as quality
One ingredient: stone-ground green tea. No fillers, no blends, no additives. Simplicity isn't a style — it's proof of quality.
iii.
Ritual without pretension
We honor the ceremony but never gatekeep it. Whisked in a chawan or shaken over ice — every way of drinking matcha is welcome here.
